“The first supermarket supposedly appeared on the American landscape in 1946. That is not very long ago. Until then, where was all the food? Dear folks, the food was in homes, gardens, local fields, and forests. It was near kitchens, near tables, near bedsides. It was in the pantry, the cellar, the backyard.” - Joel Salatin
Do me a favor before we go any further on this page…close your eyes and think of what you made for dinner last night. What did you pack for lunch, or for your kids lunch? Now think about what you know about those ingredients, where did they come from? Do you know the farmer? Do you know if it’s seasonal, or even what country it comes from?
Those are some hard questions aren’t they? I was like you, doing my best to feed my family nutritious foods that I could feel good about, but the truth is that I couldn’t feel good about most of it, even though much of it was made from whole foods. I was totally disconnected from the food I was eating. Most of us are. I knew something had to change.
My first garden was massive design project that required excavating most of our backyard, installing complicated drainage, and moving a good sized hill! But it also introduced me to the benefits of growing vegetables, herbs, medicinal flowers and plants and fruits in the backyard, and also to raised bed gardening. I’ve been growing in raised beds ever since and now they are what I recommend and design almost exclusively.
Raised Garden Beds are adaptable and accessible for all, and with some love, care and seasonal preparation you can produce 3 or even 4 seasons of healthy and delicious food with as few as 2-3 raised beds.
Working with Raised Roots Garden Design is easy, and I’m happy to offer our clients a full service experience including professional site preparation and the opportunity to build timeless kitchen garden hardscapes and outdoor living spaces with materials such as premium hardwoods, masonry and regional stone, as well as recycled materials such as plastics and steel.
With my partner, we are proud to share with you more than 50 years of combined experience to help you create your not only your dream culinary garden, but to help you immerse yourself into a new more sustainable and localvore way of life. The best part? In most cases, your new garden can be installed and planted in a single day and you could be harvesting something delicious in less than a week.
